The Odyssey, a residential cruise ship marketed as a floating home, stopped moving through Southeast Asia this week. The halt leaves hundreds of long-term residents on land in Cambodia after the operating company cited a sharp increase in fuel prices.

Villa Vie Residences, a Florida-based operator, launched the vessel two years ago for a three-year trip across all seven continents. The service combined permanent sea residency with global travel. The company reported that monthly fuel expenses per cabin, which historically averaged $1,800, recently hit an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia. Management linked this surge to the war in Iran.

Officials said the ship slowed its itinerary and spent more time in port to reduce consumption, but those measures did not offset the rising costs. "We have been unable to continue carrying the resulting operating losses," the company said. It noted that passing the full cost increase to residents is "not a realistic solution." The firm is now focusing on restructuring while supporting staff and residents.

Sihanoukville Autonomous Port stated last week that the vessel docked on Oct. 23 for a scheduled five-day visit. The ship was originally due to head to Vietnam but remained in the port on Wednesday. The Odyssey carried 203 passengers from 15 nationalities, mostly Americans, plus 156 crew members. The vessel has a total capacity for 650 residents.

Passengers have been instructed to leave the ship, while the immediate status of the crew remains undetermined. The Odyssey had a confirmed itinerary extending into November 2027. Villa Vie Residences also planned a second residential ship for early 2029, though the suspension statement did not clarify the future of that project.
