Approximately 29% of American adults now identify as atheists, agnostics, or members of the religiously unaffiliated group. This demographic, often referred to as nones, constitutes nearly one-third of the adult population in the United States. Within this group, one in three individuals reports having never attended a religious service during their upbringing. These figures provide a large dataset for analyzing the impact of religious affiliation on personal well-being.

Timmerie Geagea, a host on the Relevant Radio program Trending, discussed these statistics in a segment aired on weekdays at 6pm CT. The discussion compared viewpoints held by theists and nontheists regarding the source of happiness. Geagea noted that the decline in religious affiliation has produced direct effects on family structures and population trends. The divorce rate has dropped in recent years, but this decrease is attributed primarily to a steep decline in marriage rates rather than a reduction in marital breakdowns.

Humanist perspectives argue that religious believers live in a state of blissful ignorance. This view suggests that faith allows individuals to surrender real-world suffering to a supernatural power, thereby masking the true challenges of life. Geagea countered this argument by stating that offering difficulties to God is not an act of stupidity or reliance on ignorance. Instead, the presence of a divine guide makes facing life hardships easier. The segment posited that trusting in God to provide for one’s needs creates a sense of well-being that persists even when external conditions seem difficult.

A psychologist writing for the Washington Post suggested that religious individuals report higher levels of happiness because their beliefs offer comfort, meaning, and a sense of well-being. A separate study found that people with religious beliefs demonstrate a stronger commitment to gratitude, generosity, service, and charitable activity. Theistic belief encourages a supernatural outlook on the world, which motivates individuals to pay forward blessings. This act of paying forward is described as a tangible form of spreading religious love. Geagea argued that faith provides the capacity for fulfillment, noting that rejecting hedonism opens individuals to a divine love that is only accessible through knowledge of God.

Enlightenment philosophies such as humanism and yoga often promote the idea that shedding outdated or discriminatory theological beliefs leads to greater independence and freedom. These arguments view religion as a set of restrictions that prevent individuals from thinking critically for themselves. In contrast, the segment emphasized that human beings are created for communion. Geagea stated, "The human person is created for what? Communion. You and I were created to be with one another. We were created not only for the community of people that we are around here on earth but we were created to be in communion with God. This is fundamental. No person can deny the fact that they were created and born into a family." The conception of each person is described as an imitation of the eternal love between the three persons of the Trinity.
