San Antonio City Council voted Thursday to authorize a construction contract worth up to $9,173,961. The funding covers the replacement of Fire Station 33, which currently operates out of an aging building on Southwest 36th Street.

The city awarded the project to Marksmen General Contractors, LLC. The new station will be built at 2935 Castroville Road, a location situated just two blocks from the existing facility at 2002 SW 36th St. Officials clarified that this project is a direct replacement rather than an expansion of the department’s coverage area.

Reynaldo Rodriguez, a resident who lives next door to the current station, hears the fire trucks depart and return daily. He noted that the station’s presence provides a sense of security for the neighborhood. Rodriguez stated that the station is accessible for any needs in the area. He emphasized that the new location will remain close to the community.

Joe Arrington, the San Antonio Fire Department’s public information officer, cited physical limitations as a primary reason for the rebuild. He stated that the department has physically outgrown its older stations. Arrington explained that advanced alerting systems and modern equipment require more space than the older facilities can accommodate. The new design will allow for additional apparatus in the future.

The project is funded through the city’s 2022 bond program. The contract cost is included in the fiscal year 2027 capital budget. Arrington said the replacement addresses specific space and technology constraints found in the department’s older infrastructure.
